Golfers Lose Lead, Trail by Four Entering Final Round

May 21, 2009

UCLA's second-ranked women's golf team fell from atop the leader board Thursday, but remained within striking distance at the NCAA Women's Golf Championship, hosted at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, MD.

The Bruins will enter the final round in third place at 893 (+29), four shots behind third-round leader USC (889, +25). Arizona State slipped into second place at 891 (+27). North Carolina was fourth at 906 (+42), followed by Virginia and Denver in a tie for fifth at 908 (+44).

UCLA recorded its worst round of the tournament -- a 16-over par score of 304 -- and yielded 11 shots to USC, which shot its best score of the event (293, +5). Top-ranked Arizona State posted the best score of the day, a three-over par round of 291.

Freshman Stephanie Kono posted UCLA's best score of the day -- a two-over par round of 74. Kono was one-over par on the day before hitting her second shot into the bunker at the 18th. She failed to save par and carded a score of 36 on the inward nine. She was tied for 15th at 223 (+7).

Sophomore Maria Jose Uribe, despite a five-over par 77 on Thursday, remained within sight of the overall lead at 218 (+2). She trailed USC's Jennifer Song, who posted a 71 (-1), by two shots. Uribe recovered nicely from consecutive bogeys at the 16th and 17th holes to record a sand save on the 18th.

Senior Tiffany Joh posted a score of 76 (+4) and was tied for 28th at 226 (+10). Joh was two-over par after 17 holes before a double bogey at 18 gave her a 40 on the back nine.

Sophomore Glory Yang and junior Sydnee Michaels were tied for 41st at 229 (+13) Yang carded a score of 77 (+5) and Michaels posted a round of 79 (+7), which was not used in team scoring.

On Friday, the Bruins will tee off from the first tee with USC and Arizona State beginning at 10 a.m. PDT.
