Los Angeles, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UCLA Baseball team (16-4, 4-1) rebounded from its loss last night to defeat the California Golden Bears, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon. Junior Pat Valaika led the way, going 3-5 while matching a career-high with four RBI.

Junior right-hander Nick Vander Tuig put together another strong outing, allowing two runs, neither of them earned, in seven innings of work. Vander Tuig also struck out four to improve to 4-2 on the year. Left-hander Justin Jones suffered the loss for the Golden Bears after giving up three runs, none of them earned, in 4.1 innings pitched.

After a scoreless first inning, California took the early lead starting when Andrew Knapp reached on an error by Ty Moore. After a single advanced Knapp to third, Vander Tuig induced a 6-4-3 double play from Chris Paul, allowing Paul to score to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead. Nick Halamandaris then hit a solo home run to right in the next at-bat, increasing Cal's lead to 2-0. The Bruins got one back in the bottom of the inning though, when Brett Urabe hit a groundout to shortstop with Shane Zeile on third, allowing Zeile to score and cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Vander Tuig held the Golden Bears scoreless for the next three innings, and in the bottom of the fifth UCLA went for three runs to take a 4-2 lead. With one out, Moore reached on an error by Jones and then advanced to third on a single by Brian Carroll. Trent Chatterton walked to load the bases, and two batters later Valaika cleared them with a triple to right-center to put the Bruins ahead.

UCLA broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four more runs to bring the lead to 8-2. After Zeile and Kevin Williams reached to start the inning, Eric Filia pinch hit for Urabe and hit a double to left-center to score Zeile and advance Williams. After a sacrifice fly by Moore made it 6-2, Carroll walked and Chatterton hit a groundout to short, scoring Filia to increase the lead to 7-2. Two batters later, Valaika singled home Carroll to give UCLA a six-run advantage.

California would add a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Devon Rodriguez, but that would be all and UCLA went on to claim the 8-3 victory.

Overall, Vander Tuig gave up just five hits in his seven innings of work, walking only one. Carroll and Zeile each scored two runs on the day, while Chatterton went 2-4 with a run and a RBI.

The Bruins and Golden Bears (14-9, 4-1) will play the rubber match of their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. out at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Sophomore Grant Watson (4-0, 1.10 ERA) will take the mound for UCLA.
