Weston Dunlap, a 6-7 quick hitter from Newport Harbor HS, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend UCLA in the Fall, the athletic department announced Wednesday. For Head Coach Al Scates, Dunlap's signing brings the number of recruits to seven players.
At Newport Harbor, Dunlap earned six varsity letters in volleyball and basketball as a three-year starter for both teams. This season, Dunlap leads the Sailors in kills and blocks, and last season was named the MVP of the Orange County Championships tournament.
"We've projected him (Dunlap) as a potential starter," said Scates. "He'll be on the right side of the Blue Curtain, and we'll give him a good look. He could contribute immediately."
As a club player with the Balboa Bay Club, he has won a pair of bronze medals at the last two Junior Olympics. He was also named to the JO All-Tournament Teams in 2005 and '06. Last season his club team won the Boys' Classic Championship.
In basketball, he was recently named 1st Team All-Sunset League. He also earned MVP honors for the Newport-Mesa "Dream Team."
Dunlap joins Phillip Darin (Edison HS, Huntington Beach, CA), Darwin Edwards (Peninsula HS, Palos Verdes, CA), David Freitag (Pacific Lutheran HS, Torrance, CA), Marko Glisic (DuPage CC, Glen Ellyn, IL), Jack Polales (New Trier HS, Winnetka, IL) and Alex Scattareggia (Rancho Bernardo HS, San Diego, CA) in the Bruins' 2007 incoming class.
