The top-ranked UCLA women's golf team was tied for second place with three teams after the first day of competition in the Arizona Wildcat Invitational at Arizona National Golf Course in Tucson.
The Bruins, who led the tournament for awhile at even par, finished at four-over par 288 and were tied in the runner-up spot with Arizona, Oklahoma State and Duke. Arizona State led the 16-team field at three-over par 287. Auburn was sixth at 292 (+8) and Pepperdine was seventh at 293 (+9).
Individually for the Bruins, junior Tiffany Joh and freshman Glory Yang were tied for third place at one-under par 70. Sophomore Sydnee Michaels was tied for 19th after posting a 73 (+2) and junior Ryann O'Toole was tied for 39th at four-over par 75. Freshman Maria Jose Uribe was tied for 73rd following an uncharacteristic round of 80 (+9).
Both Yang and Joh were as low as two-under par, but back nine bogeys derailed better scores. Joh's birdie at the par 5 18th gave her a subpar round.
Duke's Amanda Blumenherst was the first-round leader after firing a three-under par 68. Stanford's Mari Chun was second at 69 (-2).
