A plethora of Bruin talent will be competing at the 2007 USATF Senior/Junior National Championships beginning on Wednesday, June 20th in Indianapolis, IN as roster spots for the World Championships and PanAm Games are at stake. Incoming freshmen, current Bruins and prominent alumni will all compete this weekend.
USATF Junior National Championships
The junior meet qualifies athletes for the PanAm Junior Games and will feature several young women and men from UCLA.
On the men's side, current Bruins Alex Crabill (5000m), Jake Matthews (steeple), Marco Anzures (steeple), Bo Taylor (shot/disc), Darius Savage (shot/disc), Nick Robinson (shot), Darius Reed (110mH) and Marlon Patterson (1500m) will compete.
Savage is the top-ranked junior man in both the shot and discus, while Taylor and Robinson join Savage in the top-10 in their respective events. The throwers will be dropping down in weight as the junior implements are used (shot-13.2 lb/disc-1.75kg). Reed, the top-ranked high hurdler, will also have to adjust as the heights of the hurdles are lowered (39-inch).
All of the distance runners are ranked in the top-10 in the country in their events.
Incoming frosh Cory Primm is the top-ranked 800m runner and should come away as the champion in Indy.
On the women's side, two incoming Bruins will compete - Shannon Murikami and Ke'Nyia Richardson. Murakami is ranked in the top-10 in the 1500m, while Richardson, the high school record-holder in the triple jump, ranks in the top-10 in the long, triple and 100m hurdles.
USATF Senior National Championships
Numerous former Bruins will be competing in the senior portion of the meet as many are poised for spots on the world team.
On the women's side, Hasani Roseby, Michelle Perry, Joanna Hayes, Dawn Harper, Sheena Johnson, Amy Acuff, Chelsea Johnson, Tracy O'Hara, Suzy Powell, Jessica Cosby and Cari Soong highlight the alumni competing. Nicole Leach, the 2007 NCAA 400m hurdles champion will debut in the senior event. Incoming frosh and high school record-holder in the pole vault, Tori Anthony, will compete in the senior competition.
On the men's side, recent graduate and NCAA runner-up in the intermediate hurdles, Brandon Johnson, will compete. Greg Garza, the fourth-place finisher in the discus at NCAA's will also compete as both have a good shot at the PanAm team.
Kevin Craddock was slated to compete in the high hurdles, but had a slight setback with a hamstring injury and is going to be held out to insure his health for next season.
