Redwood City, Calif. - The eighth-ranked UCLA varsity eight boat was narrowly defeated by the 16th ranked Fighting Irish crew in the last day of the Windermere Stanford Invitational at Redwood Shores. The second-varsity squared fared better against their Notre Dame counterparts, defeating them by nearly three boat-lengths.
The UCLA varsity 8 was coming off of a tough first day at the Stanford Invitational, having lost to UVA and UCF boats. Once again, the Bruins effort came up just short as No.16 Notre Dame was able to hold off a charging Bruin boat. A tight race throughout, the Fighting Irish registered a time of 6 minutes and 46.50 seconds, a narrow margin ahead of UCLA's 6:48.98.
UCLA's second-varsity 8 was able to build on their first-day effort and defeat their second opponent in 3 races today. The Bruins took an early lead on Notre Dame in the first half of the race before using aggressive rowing to find open water and extend their lead to 3 boat lengths. The Bruins crossed the finish line in a time of 6:58.22, easily eclipsing Notre Dame's mark of 7:11.01.
The UCLA varsity four race concluded competition for the Bruins by also taking on a Notre Dame boat. The Bruins delivered an inconsistent effort that ruined their chances of catching up to a charging Notre Dame crew. The Fighting Irish extended an early open-water lead to finish more than 25 seconds ahead of the Bruins.
The Bruins return to action next week when they host the Miller Cup at Ballona Creek, Marina del Rey, Calif. on Saturday, April 21st. Last year, UCLA swept all four events over LMU, UCSB, USD, and SDSU en route to a Miller Cup championship.
