Bruins Travel Locally This Week
The No. 3 UCLA women's soccer team (6-1-1) takes its six-match winning streak into this week's road matches at Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara. The Bruins begin the weekend in Northridge, taking on the Matadors (4-5) at 4:00 p.m. UCLA rounds out the weekend in Santa Barbara on Sunday, facing the Gauchos (3-4-1) at 4:00 p.m. Live stats for both matches are available: Cal State Northridge / UCSB.
Ellis Gets No. 200
UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis notched the 200th coaching victory of her UCLA career last week in the Bruins' 6-1 win over Utah on Friday evening. UCLA also defeated Missouri on Sunday, pushing Ellis' record to 201-35-12 (.835). Her overall coaching record, which includes two seasons at the University of Illinois, stands at 220-53-12.
UCLA Goes 2-0 in Women's Cup Action
The Bruins enjoyed a very successful showing at last week's UCLA Women's Cup, outscoring the competition 11-1 in victories over Utah and Missouri. UCLA's 6-1 win over Utah on Friday night marked the Bruins best offensive performance of the season. Senior Lauren Cheney had two goals and an assist in that match. Kristina Larsen was the Bruins' top goal scorer on Sunday, as she punched in two in a 5-0 victory over Missouri. Defender Jenna Belcher also had a fine week, notching three assists in the two games.
Bruins Hitting Their Stride
After starting the season with a loss (North Carolina) and a tie (San Diego), the Bruins have been on a hot streak as of late, reeling off six straight victories from Aug. 30-Sept. 20. UCLA has also outscored the competition 22-2 during the six-match winning streak.
UCLA Up to No. 3
UCLA earned its highest ranking of the season in the NSCAA/adidas Coaches' Poll this week, checking in at No. 3 behind North Carolina and Stanford. The Bruins maintained the No. 5 spot in Soccer America's weekly rankings, and are also ranked No. 3 by Soccer Times. The NSCAA rankings can be found HERE.
Adams Headed to Philadelphia
Women's Professional Soccer held the WPS Expansion Draft on Sept. 11 for its two 2010 expansion clubs, the Atlanta Beat and the Philadelphia Independence. Former Bruin All-American Danesha Adams, who was a member of the Chicago Red Stars, was picked up by Philadelphia in the second round (11th overall).
USC Match to Air on Fox Soccer Channel
Fox Soccer Channel is scheduled to air a live broadcast of the UCLA-USC match on Oct. 30 at Drake Stadium. That match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. Fox Sports Net carried last year's match at the LA Coliseum, a 2-1 UCLA victory.
Tracking Lauren Cheney
Senior Lauren Cheney notched the 24th game-winning goal of her career against Illinois on Sept. 4, moving her within two of the UCLA career record of 26 held by both Danesha Adams and Traci Arkenberg. Two other career school marks that Cheney has a chance at breaking are the records for both points and goals. Cheney's 137 points ranks third all-time at UCLA behind Arkenberg (169) and Adams (140). Cheney also trails Arkenberg (71) and Adams (60) in all-time goals with 55.
