LOS ANGELES - In a dual match that lasted over five hours, junior Andrea Remynse helped the fourth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team avenge its only loss of the year on Saturday, as her come-from-behind victory at court No. 3 sealed a 4-3 Bruin win over third-ranked Cal at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA, which dropped a 4-3 decision to the Golden Bears at the ITA National Team Indoors earlier this month, improves to 11-1 on the year. With the loss, Cal moves to 8-2.

Cal actually owned a 3-1 lead in Saturday's match, as the Golden Bears won the doubles point and then received singles wins from Jana Juricova (court No. 1) and Marina Cossou (court No. 2). UCLA's lone bright spot early on came when freshman Stephanie Hoffpauir notched a 6-2, 6-0 win over Annie Goransson at court No. 6.

The Bruins managed to inch a little closer when Pamela Montez downed fellow freshman Tayler Davis, 6-3, 7-5 at court No. 4, making the score 3-2 Cal. Although the Bruins were gaining momentum, UCLA still faced the prospect of having to win two three-set matches to pull off the victory, as both Maya Johansson and Remynse had lost the first set in their matches at court Nos. 5 and 3, respectively.

Johansson managed to come though however, battling back for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Nelly Radeva to tie the match at 3-3.

All the attention then moved to court No. 3, where Remynse had just fought back to take the second set 6-4. After getting an early break in the third, Remynse worked her way to a 5-3 lead before Andersson held, forcing Remynse to serve it out. She did just that, fighting off two break points in that final game to eventually take the match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

It was a personal victory for Remynse, whose win on Saturday helped erase the memory of a three-set loss to Cal in the exact same situation in 2008. That year, Cal's Cristina Visico notched a 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(2) win over Remynse in the deciding match to give the Golden Bears a 4-3 win.

Saturday's win should give the Bruins some added confidence heading into Wednesday's match with No. 10 USC. That showdown will take place at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m.
