CORVALLIS, Ore. - The UCLA baseball team fell to Oregon State, 10-1, at Goss Stadium in a Pac-10 series opener Friday evening before 2,436 fans. Oregon State right-hander Mike Stutes (3-6) logged his first complete game of the season, allowing one run and four hits while totaling nine strikeouts for the host Beavers (23-18, 10-9 Pac-10).

Bruin left-hander Tim Murphy (3-6) was tagged with the loss, exiting after recording four outs. Murphy allowed six runs off one hit and six walks through 1.1 innings for UCLA (24-22, 7-9 Pac-10).

Oregon State was led offensively by center fielder Chris Hopkins and catcher Erik Ammon, as each player went 2-for-3. Hopkins and third baseman Garett Nash each scored a team-leading two runs, and Ammon led the Beavers with a three RBI.

The Beavers staked a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of five walks and two base-hits in the inning. With the bases loaded and one out, second baseman Daniel Robertson lined a two-RBI single through the right side. Oregon State followed with consecutive walks, the second of which sent home shortstop Joey Wong and chased Murphy. Second baseman Lonnie Lechelt drove home two runners with a single to left field. The Beavers added their sixth run on a bases-loaded two-out wild pitch, scoring first baseman Ryan Ortiz.

In the bottom of the fourth, Oregon State scored two more runs. With runners aboard second and third base, catcher Erik Ammon sent home both Beavers with a line-drive single to center field, handing Oregon State an 8-0 lead.

The Bruins scored one run in the top of the seventh inning. With one out and runners at the corners, designated hitter Cody Decker lifted a sacrifice fly ball to center field, deep enough to send home shortstop Brandon Crawford.

Oregon State regained its eight-run advantage, as Ortiz lined a two-out single to right field, sending home center fielder Chris Hopkins from second base. The Beavers scored their 10th run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

UCLA left-hander Rob Rasmussen hurled a season-high 4.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs and five hits. Southpaw Matt Grace followed Rasmussen in relief, surrendering two runs and four hits in the final two innings.

The Bruins return to action at Oregon State on Saturday at 1 p.m. UCLA right-hander Charles Brewer (6-4) takes the hill against Oregon State left-hander Tanner Robles (3-1).
