LOS ANGELES - The sixth-seeded UCLA women's tennis team cruised in its 2011 NCAA Tournament opener at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Saturday, downing Quinnipiac, 4-0 to advance to Sunday's second round. Awaiting the Bruins on Sunday will be local rival San Diego, which downed UNLV, 4-2 in their first-round encounter.
UCLA (19-5) dominated every aspect of Saturday's contest, claiming the doubles point with a pair of 8-3 and 8-1 wins at court Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
All three of the Bruins' singles wins were in straight sets. Wins by Carling Seguso (court No. 6) and McCall Jones (court No. 1) quickly put the Bruins within a point of clinching the match. Noelle Hickey, UCLA's highest-ranked singles player at No. 41 nationally, finished things off for the Bruins at court No. 2, downing Adrienne Markison, 6-1, 6-1.
Sunday's second round is scheduled to begin at Noon. The winner advances to the next week's round of 16 in Stanford, Calif.
