The second-ranked UCLA men's golf team headlines the 15-team field in the 33rd annual USC Collegiate Invitational at North Ranch Country Club, Feb. 28-Mar.1.
Winners of two tournaments this season, the Bruins will be seeking their fifth victory in this event since 1978. Previously, they won tournament titles in 1979, '81, '84 and 2003. Host USC and Stanford have also won four times at North Ranch, and Arizona State has won this event eight times.
The UCLA lineup will feature one senior, two sophomores and two freshmen.
Rookie Patrick Cantlay will highlight the UCLA lineup. Cantlay finished second at the Battle of the Beach Feb. 15 by recording three rounds below 70. Earlier in February, he tied for first at the Amer Ani Invitational in Hawai'i before losing in a playoff. He leads the team in scoring average at 70.2 and is 17-under par through 15 rounds this season.
Sophomore Pontus Widegren is ranked 28th this week on the strength of his 71.9 scoring average and his victory at the Fall Preview in September. Widegren tied for 17th at Pelican Bay two weeks ago and has not finished out of the Top 20 this season.
Senior Connor Driscoll recorded his best collegiate finish at Pelican Bay, tying for third and dropping his scoring average to 73.8. He also has a pair of fifth place finishes this season.
Sophomore Mario Clemens won the Cal Poly Invitational in October and boasts the team's second best scoring average, 71.6 in 15 rounds. He is just seven-over par this season, a figure that ranks second on the team.
Finally, freshman Anton Arboleda will compete after tying for 14th at the Battle of the Beach. He also recorded his best collegiate round at Pelican Bay, posting a one-under par 69 in the first round. Arboleda is averaging 74.3.
