LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's basketball team has been ranked No. 17, nationally, in the preseason Associated Press (AP) poll, as released on Friday. The Bruins are joined by Pac-12 opponents Arizona (16) and California (24) in the preseason AP poll.
Two weeks ago, UCLA was ranked No. 20 in the preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
As announced at Pac-12 men's basketball media on Friday, the Bruins have been selected to finish first in the Pac-12 Conference this season, according to a poll of media members who cover Pac-12 men's basketball.
The Bruins posted a 23-11 overall record in 2010-11, advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. UCLA finished second in the then-Pac-10 Conference with a 13-5 record.
UCLA returns three starters from last season's team - senior guard Lazeric Jones, junior forward Reeves Nelson and sophomore center Joshua Smith. Nelson led the Bruins last season with 13.9 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per game. In addition, UCLA welcomes sophomore 6-foot-10 forwards David and Travis Wear, who sat out last season due to NCAA rules after transferring from North Carolina.
In each of Ben Howland's previous eight seasons as the UCLA head coach, the Bruins have either been ranked or receiving votes in the preseason Associated Press or ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls. Last season, UCLA entered the season having received votes in each of the two preseason polls.
With UCLA's Pauley Pavilion undergoing renovation through the 2011-12 season, the team will play their 18 home games at local sites this year in the "Bruin Road Show." The Bruins will play 14 home games at the Los Angeles Sports Arena and four at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
UCLA opens the "Bruin Road Show" in Ontario, Calif., with an exhibition game Sunday, Nov. 6, against Cal State San Bernardino at Citizens Business Bank Arena. That game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
The Bruins' regular season gets underway Friday, Nov. 11, against Loyola Marymount at the L.A. Sports Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
