UCLA Men's Tennis Signs U.S. Standout Holden Seguso

May 10, 2007

LOS ANGELES - UCLA men's tennis head coach Billy Martin announced the signing of U.S. standout Holden Seguso to a national letter of intent on Thursday. Seguso joins three other American players, Nicolas Meister, Ahmed Ismail and Christopher Ho, as a member of the Bruins' 2007 recruiting class. Fall Signing Release

"We're obviously thrilled that Holden has decided to become a Bruin," said Martin, who is in the midst of his 14th season as head coach at UCLA. "He's the type of player who can come in and make a difference right away, which I think is significant since we lose four very talented seniors at the end of this year. His addition, along with the three other players we signed in the fall, should help us remain very competitive in the Pac-10 and on the national level."

Seguso, who is the son of four-time doubles Grand Slam champion Robert Seguso and former Canadian tennis star Carling Bassett-Seguso, was one of the top junior players in the world in 2006, achieving a career-high junior world ranking of No. 33. He has represented the U.S. in several international events, including the U.S. Open, Orange Bowl, Eddie Herr and the Canadian Open. His best showing in a grand slam singles event came at the 2005 U.S. Open, where he reached the round of 16. He was also a semifinalist in singles at the Luxilon Cup in 2005. He is an accomplished doubles player as well, capturing the USTA International Spring Championships in 2005 (w/Pavel Chekhov). Seguso is also a two-time doubles semifinalist at the prestigious Eddie International Junior Championships.

Seguso, who graduated from the Bradenton Preparatory Academy while training at the world renowned Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, is from Boca Raton, Fla. He is one of seven players featured in the junior tennis documentary Unstrung, which recently debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival and is due out in theatres this fall.
