The UCLA softball team unveiled its 2010 National Championship banner during Sunday's Alumni Game, which the Alumni won 2-0 against a short-handed Bruin squad. Caitlin Benyi's two-run homer in the first was enough offense for Megan Langenfeld, who pitched four scoreless innings for the Alumni. Senior GiOnna DiSalvatore and freshman Kellie Fox had two hits apiece for the Bruins.
The National Championship banner, the 12th hanging on the Easton Stadium outfield wall, features a photo of the UCLA squad which set numerous World Series and school records en route to the program's 11th NCAA title and 12th national championship.
The Alumni Game featured a pitcher's duel between Langenfeld (four strikeouts) for the Alumni and senior Donna Kerr and freshman Jessica Hall for the 2010-11 Bruins. The Alumni got all the runs they would need in the top of the first. Andrea Duran led off with a bloop single to right and came home on Benyi's home run to left field to make it 2-0.
The 2010-11 Bruins had a pair of hits in both the first and third innings by DiSalvatore and Fox, but could not push a run across thanks to a blanket defense by the Alumni which featured 12 fielders in the first three innings and 17 in the fourth. UCLA had five hits as a team, with freshman Alyssa Tiumalu posting the other single. In the circle, Kerr tossed the first two innings, while Hall pitched the third and fourth.
The 2010-11 Bruins play five times during the Fall, starting on Nov. 2 against Fullerton JC. UCLA also hosts Biola (Nov. 5), Cerritos College (Nov. 10), Mt. SAC (Nov. 12) and Santa Ana College (Nov. 16). Start times are 2 p.m. for each game at Easton Stadium and admission is free.
