UCLA Baseball Falls to Washington State, 10-5

PULLMAN, Wash. - The UCLA baseball team dropped a 10-5 decision at Washington State on Saturday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field. Right fielder Gabe Cohen led the Bruins (28-24, 12-8 Pac-10) with a 3-for-4 effort, one run and one RBI and tallied his second multi-hit game in as many days.

Washington State second baseman Jeff Miller finished 2-for-5 with three RBI, two runs and his eighth home run of the season. Right fielder Jared Prince hit 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs and one home run for the Cougars (27-23, 10-13 Pac-10).

Left-hander Jayson Miller (5-2) earned the victory, allowing five runs (four earned) and nine hits in 8 1/3 innings. Miller recorded five strikeouts and walked one. Bruin left-hander Tim Murphy (4-3) absorbed the loss, surrendering eight runs off eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

UCLA designated hitter Casey Haerther finished 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Washington State took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led the rest of the way. With two outs, left fielder Simi Reynolds drove home third baseman Paul Gran with a single through the right side. The Cougars added two more runs on a base hit up the middle by third baseman Jim Murphy.

Miller's two-run home run to left in the bottom of the third increased Washington State's advantage to five runs.

UCLA cut the Cougars' lead to 5-2 with a two-run fourth inning. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis led off the inning with a base hit up the middle and scored with two outs on first baseman Cody Decker's double down the left-field line. Right fielder Gabe Cohen lined a single to left field, scoring Decker from second.

The Cougars used a solo home run by right fielder Jared Prince to take a 6-2 lead in the fifth inning. An RBI-double to left and a run-scoring infield single by Prince in the sixth inning handed Washington State an 8-2 advantage. The Cougars tallied one run on an RBI-double by Murphy in the seventh inning.

The Bruins scored once in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Alden Carrithers. UCLA's ninth-inning rally came up short, as the Bruins scored twice and left two runners on base.

UCLA and Washington State conclude their three-game series Sunday at 12 p.m.

Game Notes: Gabe Cohen recorded UCLA's one RBI on Friday and collected another on Saturday; Cohen has tallied one or more hits in each of his last five games...Tim Murphy made his 10th start of the season and absorbed his first loss in Pac-10 play (4-1 in conference action)...Charles Brewer made his third appearance of the season and allowed two runs and four hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
