Later this week, junior diver Laura Winn will compete in her first Senior National Championship in the Women's 10 Meter Platform event. The meet, being held at the Morcom Aquatic Center on the campus of Florida State University, commences today and runs through Sunday, August 16th. Ten event championships are at stake and are available to 125 of the best athletes in the country competing for the top spot.
Winn continues to build on a year that saw her make a huge leap athletically. In February, she finished second in the Pac-10 Championship Meet on platform, by just 5.5 points. After taking the lead in the fourth round, recording four scores of eight and one nine, Winn fell just shy in the last round to Stanford's Carmen Stellar. The performance was an enormous personal best (252.05) as her best prior to that day had been just 216.25 points. Winn qualified to the National Meet through the U.S. Diving Senior Zone D Championship, held July 18-19.
"No matter what happens out there, Laura has just completed her dream summer," said dive coach Tom Stebbins. "When we spoke about the possibilities in early April, we put this goal out there as the reach. Up to this point, Laura has done everything perfectly, and it is why she has this opportunity to represent UCLA and our diving program. I couldn't be more excited about travelling to Florida this week."
Winn's event will begin at 5:00 PM (EST) on Friday evening. Results, as well as a live webcast of this and all of the events may be seen here.
