No. 5 UCLA Baseball Drops 6-2 Decision to No. 22 Oregon

LOS ANGELES - The No. 5 UCLA baseball team lost its series opener to No. 22 Oregon, 6-2, on Thursday evening at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Tyler Heineman, Cody Regis and Pat Valaika each had two hits for the Bruins (20-6, 7-3).

Alex Keudell (4-3) earned the victory for Oregon (19-8, 7-3), scattering eight hits through seven scoreless innings. Aaron Jones led the visiting Ducks at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs.

UCLA right-hander Adam Plutko (4-2) absorbed the loss, surrendering five runs and nine hits in 4.1 innings.

Oregon scored one run in the second inning, before adding two in the third and two in the fourth. Jones' two-run blast in the bottom of the third handed Oregon a 3-0 cushion.

The Ducks claimed a 6-0 lead on Jones' second home run of the game, a solo shot to left field in the seventh inning.

The Bruins got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. With two runners in scoring position, Matt Giovinazzo lined a pinch-hit single to shallow center field before Beau Amaral skied a scoring fly ball to left.

Amaral and Trevor Brown each extended their hitting streaks to a season-high 12 games.

Brett Thomas and Kyle Garlick went 2-for-4 for Oregon, while J.J. Altobelli went 2-for-5 with two runs.

UCLA and Oregon continue their three-game Pac-12 series on Friday night. Game time at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium is 6 p.m.

Game Notes: Jeff Gelalich's streak reaching base safely in 25 consecutive contests was snapped on Thursday night ... Tyler Heineman logged his 10th multiple-hit effort of the season ... Zack Weiss surrendered one run and two hits in 2.2 innings of relief ... Madison Poole made his second career appearance, throwing 1.1 hitless innings ... UCLA's offense finished with 10 hits, reaching the double-digit mark for the eighth time in the last 12 games.
