PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team defeated No. 2 USC, 8-4, in the championship match of the Stanford Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Senior Brittany Rowe and juniors Tanya Gandy and Katie Rulon each led UCLA with two goals.
Sunday's championship win lifted UCLA to a perfect 10-0 record for the second consecutive season. The Bruins have won each of their last seven matches against USC (4-2).
UCLA led from the start, assuming a 4-0 lead after the first quarter. The Trojans cut into the Bruins' advantage, outscoring UCLA 3-1 in the second quarter. Both teams traded goals in the third period, and UCLA blanked USC in the final frame, 2-0.
USC's Kally Lucas led the Trojans with two goals.
Junior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen made seven stops in the cage for UCLA. USC's Tumua Anae recorded 13 saves in goal.
Earlier in the day, the Bruins reached the championship match by dispatching No. 7 San Jose State, 12-7.
UCLA returns to the pool in its MPSF season-opener at No. 9 UC Irvine on Friday, Feb. 15. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
