UCLA Wins Third-Place Game Over Stanford, 10-9

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team fought off a tough fourth-ranked Stanford squad to post a 10-9 triple overtime win to capture third-place at the 2012 MPSF Tournament at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Josh Samuels, freshman Danny McClintick and sophomores Paul Reynolds and Chris Fahlsing each scored two goals to lead the Bruins. But is was sophomore Daniel Lenhart that came through with the late heroics, netting the game-winning golden goal in the third overtime period.

Bret Bonanni and BJ Churnside led the Cardinal, each scoring two goals.

Samuels got the Bruins on the board first, scoring with 2:34 left in the first period. Stanford got an equalizer on its next possession (2:15) on a power play goal from Alex Bowen to end the first quarter scoring at 1-1. Senior Griffin White put the Bruins back on top with a score with 5:23 left in the second. But Churnside scored his first at the 4:41 mark, ending the first half scoring at 2-2.

Forrest Watkins gave Stanford its first lead of the game at 3-2 (6:20), but the Bruins responded 12 seconds later with a goal by McClintick. Then McClintick gave UCLA a 4-3 lead with 3:54 left in the third period with his second straight goal. Samuels scored his second of the game to put the Bruins up 5-3 (2:22), but Bonanni scored on a penalty shot (1:53) to cut it to 5-4. UCLA ended the third period with 1 6-5 advantage, thanks to a goal by Reynolds with 1:33 left.

Bonanni scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 3:54 left in regulation, but Reynolds scored again 19 seconds later to push the lead back to two (7-5). Stanford got timely goals from Churnside (1:50) and Nick Hoversten (:41) to send the game into overtime.

Fahlsing scored the only goal of the first overtime period with just two seconds remaining to give UCLA an 8-7 lead. But Stanford scored two straight in the second overtime period to take a 9-8 lead (Travis Noll, 2:08; Andrew LaForge, 1:27). Fahlsing again came to UCLA's rescue, scoring on a power play goal with just nine seconds remaining to send it to sudden death. In the third overtime period, Lenhart netted the golden goal at the 1:27 mark.

Senior Matt Rapacz had his best game of the MPSF Tournament, registering 12 saves in goal for the Bruins. Scott Platshon was credited with 13 stops in the cage for Stanford.
