MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 4-seed UCLA men's water polo team dropped a 9-5 decision to No. 1-seed USC on Saturday afternoon in a semifinal match of the MPSF Tournament at Pepperdine's Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. Junior Scott Davidson led the Bruins (16-7) with a pair of goals.
USC (26-0) received two goals each from J.W. Krumpholz and Peter Kurzeka.
The Trojans opened the contest with a 6-0 scoring run through the first 11 minutes, 17 seconds. USC received first-quarter goals from Krumpholz (5:19), Sagehorn (4:07), Jovan Vranes (1:19) and Shea Buckner (0:41).
After consecutive second-quarter USC goals by Kurzeka (5:51) and Anthony Artukovich (5:10), the Bruins responded with their first goal of the afternoon on a strike by Davidson (4:43). Freshman Cullen Hennessy followed on a fastbreak with UCLA's second goal of the afternoon with 2:32 to play before halftime.
USC extended its margin to five (7-2) on a goal from Kurzeka at the 3:57 mark in the third period. Davidson responded from two-meters, reducing the Bruins' deficit back to four (7-3).
The Trojans led by as many as six goals early in the final quarter, scoring with 22 seconds to play in the third before adding their ninth goal of the day just 30 seconds into the final frame.
Junior goalkeeper Chay Lapin registered seven saves. USC's Joel Dennerley totaled five stops in the cage.
The Bruins will play No. 2-seed Stanford in the MPSF Tournament's third-place match on Sunday. Game time at Pepperdine's Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool is slated for 1:30 p.m.
