LOS ANGELES - Junior Tanya Gandy tallied a season-high five goals to pace the No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team past No. 10 Hartwick, 19-7, on Tuesday afternoon in the Bruins' first home game of the season.
UCLA improved to 6-0 and received goals from 11 different players.
The Bruins outscored Hartwick, 7-1, in the first period and stayed ahead the rest of the match. Junior Katie Rulon got UCLA on the board first with a goal 49 seconds into the match. Hartwick (0-3) responded with an advantage score from Megan Dahl-Smith at 6:51 in the first quarter.
The Bruins went on a 12-0 run through the end of the first half to lead 13-1 at halftime. In the final 71 seconds of the second quarter, Gandy registered three consecutive goals to add to UCLA's cushion.
UCLA added to its lead, 5-1, in the third quarter. The visiting Hawks cut UCLA's lead in the final frame, outscoring the Bruins by a 5-1 margin.
Senior Courtney Mathewson finished the contest with three goals for UCLA. Hartwick's Kirsten Hudson led the Hawks with four goals.
Junior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen registered 13 saves, as Hartwick's Jessica Dorman made 11 stops.
UCLA returns to action at the Stanford Invitational this weekend and will face Michigan and Hawai'i in Palo Alto, Calif., on Saturday, Feb. 9. The following day, the Bruins will play against San Jose State and an opponent to be determined later in the afternoon.
