UCLA freshman Maria Jose Uribe was in contention Thursday after the opening round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Uribe, 18, posted a two-under par 70 over the 6,700 yard, par 72 course. Starting on the 10th hole, she quickly birdied two of her first four holes and made the turn at two-under 34. On the inward nine, she eagled her 11th hole (the 2nd) to drop to four under par. A pair of bogeys at her 12th and 13th holes brought her back to two-under.
She trails first place Karen Stupples by three strokes. Top-ranked, tournament favorite Lorena Ochoa was tied for second at four-under par 68.
Uribe's score on the first day also was better than four other former Bruins: Jane Park was tied for 29th at 73 (+1), followed by Giulia Sergas who was tied for 43rd at 75 (+3). Charlotte Mayorkas was tied for 84th after a 77 (+5) and Hall of Famer Amy Alcott was tied for 102nd after posting a 79 (+7).
Second round action continues on Friday.
