Kerr, Offense Dominate in 9-1 Victory Over Oregon State

May 3, 2009

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Donna Kerr struck out nine and allowed only one hit and one unearned run in six innings, while senior Amanda Kamekona, juniors Julie Burney and Megan Langenfeld and sophomores GiOnna DiSalvatore and Katie Schroeder all had multiple-hit games, as the second-ranked Bruins defeated Oregon State 9-1 in six innings on Sunday at Easton Stadium.

The Bruins remain tied for first in the Pac-10 standings with Stanford at 13-5, also holding an overall record of 38-9. The Beavers fall to 24-28 overall and 3-15 in league action.

Kerr improved to 17-6 in the circle this season with the win. Langenfeld went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Burney, DiSalvatore, Kamekona and Schroeder all had two-hit games. Kamekona drove in three and DiSalvatore had two runs batted in.

After 2 1/2 scoreless innings, the Bruins broke through with three runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Monica Harrison led off with a double to left-center and Schroeder walked. One out later, Langenfeld doubled to left-center to plate Harrison and make it 1-0. With sophomore Lauren Mirabal pinch-running for Langenfeld at second, DiSalvatore roped a single up the middle to bring in a pair of runs to put the Bruins ahead 3-0.

Oregon State got a run back in the fourth. With one out, Mary Claire Brenner was hit by a pitch and Paige Lowe singled to left. One out later, Stefanie Ewing was hit to load the bases and Brenner came home on a passed ball to make it 3-1.

UCLA matched the run in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Monica Harrison walked and Schroeder singled to right. One out later, and with sophomore Grace Murray running at second for Harrison, Langenfeld singled up the middle to plate Murray and make it 4-1.

In the fifth, the Bruins added another run. Kamekona singled to lead off, stole second and came home one out later on a double to center by Burney.

The Bruins invoked the mercy rule for the second time this weekend, scoring four times in the sixth. Schroeder started off the inning with her team-best 14th home run of the season to make it 6-1. Freshman Andrea Harrison and Langenfeld followed with back-to-back singles, but sophomore Amy Crawford, who was running for Harrison, would get retired at third when DiSalvatore reached on a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning. However, Kamekona ended things with her eighth home run of the season to left to give the Bruins a 9-1 victory.

Kelly Dyer started for the Beavers and picked up the loss to fall to 10-17. She allowed two runs, four hits and one walk in two innings. Paige Hall tossed 2/3 of an inning, giving up one run, two hits and one walk, while Karmen Holladay allowed six runs, eight hits and one walk in 2 2/3 innings with one strikeout.

The Bruins resume their six-game homestand on Thursday when they host California at 1 p.m. at Easton Stadium. Gametracker and live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
