June 13, 2011
Sophomore Turquoise Thompson (Lakewood, CA/Junipero Serro HS) of the UCLA women's track & field team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for June 6-12.
Thompson placed second at the NCAA Championships in the 400m hurdles, getting edged out by a mere .004. Racing during a torrential downpour and hail storm and an hour after the race was initially delayed due to the weather, Thompson, with her knee taped, battled to the finish line with Miami's Ti'erra Brown, as both crossed the tape in a time of 55.65. The marks were extended to the thousandths of a second, and results showed Brown edged Thompson, 55.642-55.646. Thompson's time was a lifetime-best, bettering her previous top mark of 55.48 set at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships. Her time keeps her at No. 6 all-time in Bruin history and also ties her for the third-best mark in the U.S. and 14th-best mark in the world.
This is Thompson's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
Also nominated: Alec Faldermeyer, M. Track & Field.
