NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team advanced to a Sunday semifinal matchup against crosstown-rival USC in the SoCal Tourmament after defeating No. 5 Pepperdine, 11-6, Saturday afternoon at Corona del Mar High School.
The Bruins set up a semifinal meeting against the top-ranked Trojans as sophomores Kevin Kuga and Scott Davidson and senior Marco Santos each netted three goals against the Waves. UCLA (14-2) never trailed against Pepperdine (18-4), as the Bruins owned a 4-2 first-quarter lead.
Davidson scored his three goals for UCLA in the second frame, handing the Bruins a 7-3 advantage at halftime. Pepperdine inched to within three goals, trailing 9-6, after three quarters before UCLA blanked the Waves, 2-0, in the final frame.
UCLA sophomore goalkeeper Chay Lapin recorded eight saves. Pepperdine's Travis Stachowski totaled six stops in the cage.
Sophomore Scott Swanson and freshman Ben Hohl also added one goal each for UCLA. Santos finished the afternoon with five goals, after having scored twice in UCLA's 15-10 win against Pacific. Hohl finished the day with four goals in two matches.
UCLA will face USC at UC Irvine on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 10:40 a.m. Sunday's match marks the first meeting between both crosstown rivals this season.
