#9 Arizona Knocks Off Fifth-Ranked Bruins

LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Katie Schroeder went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while juniors Megan Langenfeld and Kaila Shull each drove in runs, but the fifth-ranked Bruins fell to #9 Arizona 9-2 on Saturday at Easton Stadium.

The Bruins drop to 26-8 overall and 1-4 in Pac-10 play, while the Wildcats improve to 32-8 and 4-1 in league.

UCLA scored twice in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Schroeder singled to left and moved to second on a sacrifice by freshman Andrea Harrison. Senior Amanda Kamekona followed with a single up the middle and stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Langenfeld cashed in Schroeder on a sacrifice fly to left to make it 1-0 and Shull singled up the middle to plate Kamekona to put the Bruins up 2-0.

It was all Arizona after that though, as the Wildcats scored three in the second. With one out, Lini Koria was hit by a pitch and Kristen Arriola walked. Koria was forced at third when Laine Roth grounded into a fielder's choice to third, but Lauren Schutzler launched a three-run homer to right-center to put Arizona up by one.

The Wildcats added two more in the fifth on a two-run single by Sam Banister that scored K'Lee Arredondo and Jenae Leles. In the seventh, Arizona scored four times to make it 9-2. Stacie Chambers led off with a homer, Banister walked and Koria singled. Arriola then doubled to left to score Banister and another double to left by Karissa Buchanan plated Koria to make it 8-2. The Wildcats' got their ninth run on an RBI groundout by Schutzler to score Arriola.

Redshirt sophomore Whitney Baker (8-2) started for the Bruins and allowed three runs, two hits and one walk with one strikeout in three innings. Sophomore Donna Kerr tossed the last four innings, giving up six runs, nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Sarah Akamine earned the win for the Wildcats to improve to 14-4, striking out three in 5 1/3 scoreless innings. She gave up four hits and walked one. Lindsey Sisk started and gave up two runs and three hits in one inning, while Jennifer Martinez retired the final two batters of the game. Schutzler drove in four and had two hits, as did Arriola, Chambers and Leles.
