REDLANDS, Calif. - The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team notched its third victory of the afternoon, a 16-5 win over Redlands in the Inland Empire Classic. Senior Cameron Smith led the Bruins' attack, scoring three goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Chay Lapin recorded nine stops in the cage.
Smith totaled three goals for the second time in the afternoon - the Manoa, Hawaii, resident tallied three goals against Pomona-Pitzer before scoring twice against Occidental. Sophomores Cole Consani and Scott Davidson and freshman Kevin Schmidt each registered two goals against Redlands.
UCLA got on the board first, as junior Justin Johnson scored with 4:39 to play in the first quarter. Redlands cut the Bruins' 2-0 first-quarter lead in half with a goal by Ryan Hall at the 3:12 mark. UCLA opened its lead with a 4-0 run and led 9-2 by halftime.
The Bruins outscored Redlands, 3-1, in the third quarter to assume a 12-4 cushion heading into the final frame.
Earlier in the day, UCLA defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 22-3, and Occidental, 18-3, in matches at the Inland Empire Classic at the University of Redlands. Smith finished the day having scored eight goals in three games.
UCLA returns to action in the NorCal Tournament at California on Saturday, Sept. 15 and Sunday, Sept. 16.
