Alumna and LPGA rookie Ryann O'Toole became the first UCLA graduate to earn a spot on the Solheim Cup Team when Rosie Jones named her as a captain's pick on Sunday following the Safeway Classic.
O'Toole, 24, will join the other captain's pick Vicky Hurst as well as veteran pros and Solheim Cup alumni Christie Kerr, Stacy Lewis, Morgan Pressel, Angela Stanford, Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Brittany Lincicome, Brittany Lang, Juli Inkster and Christina Kim.
The 12th playing of the Solheim Cup will be contested Kileen Castle in Ireland next month. Nine of the 12 players on this year's team were members of the victorious 2009 team.
O'Toole tied for fifth place at the Safeway Classic over the weekend, assuring that she would earn full exempt status on the 2012 LPGA Tour via the money list. O'Toole's scores of 71-69-70--210 (-3) netted her almost $56,000. In July, O'Toole finished ninth at the U.S. Women's Open, pocketing nearly $82,000. She has earned more than $165,000 on the LPGA Tour this season.
On the Futures Tour, O'Toole has three career victories, including one earlier this season in Mexico. The San Clemente native has two Top 10 results in seven starts on the LPGA Tour in 2011.
"I'm super-excited," said O'Toole. "It's a real honor to be a part of this team."
In other news over the weekend, alumna Hannah Jun placed second at the Scottish Open, firing scores of 66-73-72--211. Jun, 26, has been playing on the Ladies European Tour this season and ranks 31st on the LET Money List through Aug. 20.
