Ivory-Ganja Posting Big Performances at USA Winter Nationals

Dec. 19, 2011

Freshman Emma Ivory-Ganja has posted some big numbers on platform as she competed at the USA Winter National Meet in Knoxville, TN. The frosh had a huge night in the finals of platform on Sunday as she narrowly missed the school record by .70 points, finishing 11th overall with a score of 312.00. She had a final total score of 863.55 during all rounds of the platform.

"Emma had a big day and advanced to her first platform final," said dive coach Tom Stebbins. "Good things are coming for her. The work is very solid, so the next three months should be great for Emma."

Also over the weekend, 2011 graduate Laura Winn competed in the prelim round of platform, finishing 28th with a score of 244.80. Ivory-Ganja advanced with a 16th place finish in the preliminary in a season-best score of 281.80. She then surpassed that mark in the final with a new top score of 312.00.

"Laura keeps getting better," noted Stebbins. "This wasn't the result we hoped to get, but she moved very well and just didn't find entries. On 10 meter, that is the difference between advancing and not. Emma's first year continues to get better. She did a really solid list, and it was great seeing her put it all together."

On Thursday and Friday of last week, Maggy Boyd and Haley McNamara tried to earn their way into the main meet in the Preliminary Championships. Boyd finished 30th on three meter (226.55) and 40th on one meter (199.30), while McNamara finished 57th on three meter (187.75) and 34th on one meter (203.40). The events advanced six divers from 3M and 19 divers from 1M. The three meter event had 74 participants, while one meter had 73 participants (both of which are records in terms of athletes trying to qualify).

"I am very pleased with how Maggy and Haley competed," said Stebbins. "Maggy is already where she was last summer, and this was a very good place for Haley to conclude her fall. They both moved very well. We are definitely on the right track heading into the championship part of our season."

Ivory-Ganja is also competing on sycnhro platform, 3M individual on Tuesday and 3M synchro on Thursday.
