UCLA Women's Rowing Finishes Eighth Overall at NCAA Championships

May 27, 2012

West Windsor, N.J. - The eighth-ranked UCLA women's rowing team finished eighth overall at the 2012 NCAA Championships, earning their best team finish at the event in program history. The Bruins' varsity four and varsity eight crews each registered victories in their respective Petite Finals while the second varsity eight finished sixth in the Grand Final.

As mentioned above, the varsity eight won the Petite Final (places 7-12) with a time of 6:28.49. They finished ahead of second place Stanford by over a full second after the Cardinal clocked in with a time of 6:29.86. The Bruins also bested Harvard (6:29.89), Ohio State (6:32.69), Cornell (6:33.86) and Yale (6:39.75).

UCLA's second varsity eight finished in sixth place in the Grand Final (places 1-6) after catching a little bit of bad luck when one of the rowers caught an overhead crab, forcing the boat to come to a complete stop in the first thousand meters of the race. UCLA was in a strong position and in contention for the medals when the crab occurred, but was unable to get back into the race after the crab. The Bruins finished with a time of 7:10.40. Michigan won the Grand Final with a time of 6:37.04 while Ohio State came in second after finishing in 6:38.94. California (6:40.85), Princeton (6:42.61) and Virginia (6:44.97) finished ahead of the Bruins as well.

Like the varsity eight, the Bruins' varsity four boat finished the season on a high note after winning the Petite Final. UCLA posted a time of 7:23.89 and finished ahead of second place Notre Dame by almost two seconds. The Fighting Irish recorded a time of 7:25.35. The Bruins also outraced Wisconsin (7:25.35), Cornell (7:26.48), Harvard (7:27.26) and Michigan (7:33.75).

"I am so proud of this team," Head Coach Amy Fuller Kearney said. "The second varsity making the Grand Final and placing sixth is the highest finish ever for UCLA at the NCAA's. The Varsity Four showed impressive fight and fitness rowing through the field to win the Petite Final. The Varsity Eight rowed an inspired final taking a big risk in the first half of the race and fighting to hold the lead across the line against formidable opponents. Overall, we are all pleased with the season and very excited for the future."

Virginia won the 2012 NCAA Women's Rowing Championship, posting an 87-point team total. Michigan, California, Princeton and Ohio State rounded out the top five spots in that order.

The eighth place team finish for the Bruins is the highest in program history after the team finished 12th in their only other NCAA Championship team appearance in 2010. Though the Bruins tied with Washington in the point standings, the Huskies were awarded seventh place by virtue of their higher finish in the varsity eight race. It was the second time in three years that UCLA earned a berth to the NCAA Championships. The Bruins had previously sent an at-large varsity eight boat the NCAA Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
