Davidson's Five Goals Lead No. 3 UCLA Past No. 6 UC Irvine, 12-11

Sept. 22, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Scott Davidson registered a career-high five goals and senior Justin Johnson netted the game-winning goal with 1:29 remaining in sudden-victory overtime to lead the No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 6 UC Irvine, 12-11, Saturday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

In a back-and-forth contest, the Bruins (8-1) and Anteaters (4-3) each squandered two-goal leads in the second half and fought into overtime before UCLA emerged victorious in the third overtime period.

UCLA trailed 9-7 after UC Irvine's Tim Hutten scored his fifth goal of the afternoon (before finishing with seven). The Bruins cut the Anteater's margin to one on Davidson's fifth score and tied the contest, 9-9, on a goal by freshman Ben Hohl with 42.6 seconds to play in the contest.

Each team traded goals in the first and second overtime sessions. Bruin junior Krsto Sbutega added his second goal with eight seconds to play in the first of two three-minute overtime periods. Hutten answered for the Anteaters with 1:47 remaining in the second session.

Bruin senior Justin Johnson nailed his first score of the day with 1:05 to play in the second overtime frame. Hutten registered his team-leading seventh goal with 49 seconds remaining.

Knotted at 11-11 after 38 minutes of play, both teams entered a three-minute sudden victory overtime before Johnson's heroics led UCLA to a decisive 12-11 non-conference win.

UCLA sophomore goalkeeper Chay Lapin recorded 12 saves in the cage, and UC Irvine senior goalkeeper Matt Garcia totaled 10 stops.

UCLA returns to action next weekend and will play at No. 4 Stanford on Saturday, Sept. 29. Game time against the Cardinal is slated for 4:30 p.m. The Bruins will face Santa Clara and UC Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz, Calif., on Sunday, Sept. 30.
