PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team posted a 17-4 victory at No. 11 Princeton in both teams' season-opening match Friday evening at DeNunzio Pool. The Bruins (1-0) featured 14 goal scorers as first-year head coach Adam Wright notched his first career victory.
The visiting Bruins led from the start, opening a 3-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Senior Scott Davidson recorded UCLA's first goal of the season, a strike with 6:40 to play in the opening frame. Lathrope and Consani each added goals in the first quarter to hand the Bruins a three-goal cushion.
Princeton (0-1) cut UCLA's lead to 3-1 with a goal from Matt Hale with 7:27 to play in the second quarter. The Bruins used a 4-0 scoring run to secure a 7-1 advantage by halftime. After a goal by senior Scott Swanson (5:50), freshman Griffin White registered his first collegiate goal with 4:56 to play. Murphy and junior Clay Jorth added goals in the final 2:50 of the second quarter.
Junior Ben Hohl scored 70 seconds into the third period, pushing the Bruins' margin to 8-1. Princeton's David de L'Arbre added a goal with 6:43 to play, cutting UCLA's advantage to 8-2. The Bruins used a 3-0 scoring run to take an 11-2 lead midway through the period. After a goal from Princeton's Douglas Wiley (2:30), sophomore Matt Preciado added a goal with 22 seconds to play, extending UCLA's lead to 12-3 through three quarters.
UCLA outscored the Tigers, 5-1, in the fourth quarter. Consani added his second goal of the day (6:20) before junior Kevin Kuga found the back of the cage (5:40). Senior Tyler Jemmett scored with 4:31 remaining before Murphy registered his second goal (3:47). Freshman Josh Samuels notched his first career goal with 2:08 to play.
UCLA senior goalkeeper Chay Lapin collected four saves and allowed one goal in the first half. Freshman Matt Rapacz allowed three goals in the final two quarters. Princeton's Mike Merlone registered nine stops in the cage.
UCLA continues its weekend at the Princeton Invitational, playing one pair of games each on Saturday and Sunday. The Bruins face Brown (9:15 a.m., PT) and Iona (4:45 p.m., PT) on Saturday at Princeton.
