The men's and women's track and field teams ended the weekend's second of a pair of meets with a great performance Sunday at the Run for the Dream Invite in Fresno, Calif. The Bruins followed discus thrower Julian Wruck's record-setting day by claiming nine individual crowns, several of which were meet record results.
Sophomore Brea Buchanan started the day on a great note for the Bruins, running her way to a victory in the 55-meter hurdles event. After qualifying in first place with a time of 7.95, Buchanan stepped it up a notch in the final race by finishing with a meet record 7.74. Buchanan was also the Bruins' top finisher in the 55m dash (5th, 7.08). Sydney Lewis, Kelly Rhines, and Yasmin Woodruff also competed in the 55m and finished 6th, 10th and 19th, respectively.
That was only the beginning of a solid day for the Bruins at the Save Mart Center. Middle distance runner Danielle Low took first in the women's 600m (1:24.63) amongst a field that also featured Bruins Tiffany LaMar and Laurie Femmel. Low, a senior, also set a meet record.
Senior captain Allison Koressel was a third Bruin who won her event in record-setting fashion. The pole vaulter posted a winning height of 4.24m, a .27m improvement on the record set at the 2012 event. Fellow Bruins Karlye Marshall (3.84m) and Renee Greene (3.66m) came in second and third, respectively, behind Koressel. Elena Clarke also competed in the pole vault Sunday, taking fifth (3.51m).
Other event winners included Marcus Nilsson in the men's long jump (6.83m), Ryan Andrews in the men's shot put (16.2m/53-1.75), Yusef Merriweather in the men's 55m dash (6.44), Ava Kent in the women's one mile run (5:10.13), Alec Govi in the men's one mile run (4:15.31), and the women's 4x145m team (73.63).
