LOS ANGELES - Right-hander Charles Brewer (1-0) limited Southern to three hits in 7.2 scoreless innings as the No. 3 UCLA baseball team won its first game in the Urban Invitational, 11-2, Friday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Catcher Brent Dean powered the Bruin offense, finishing 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, two runs and one walk at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Brewer totaled six strikeouts and issued three walks in his first collegiate start. The Paradise Valley, Ariz., resident held the Jaguars (0-2) hitless through the first 6.2 innings, surrendering a base hit up the middle to right fielder Brad McDavid with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

Southern's Chris Donaby (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs and seven hits in four innings.

Bruin second baseman Alden Carrithers finished 3-for-4 with three runs. The hero from Wednesday night's 5-4, 13-inning win against UC Santa Barbara was one home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Designated hitter Cody Decker hit 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run, and right fielder Gabe Cohen finished 2-for-3 with two walks.

UCLA (3-1) led from the first inning, scoring two runs - one on a double to left-center field by Decker and another on a fielder's choice by shortstop Brandon Crawford. The Bruins assumed a 4-0 lead with two more runs in the third inning. Decker sent home third baseman Jermaine Curtis with a sacrifice fly to right field. Two batters later, Crawford lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Carrithers.

The Bruins expanded their cushion with a five-run fifth inning, batting around the order. Crawford led off the frame with bunt single down the first-base line and moved to third on center fielder Justin Uribe's double to right field. First baseman Casey Haerther reached on an error by shortstop Jesse Olivar, allowing Crawford to score.

Dean's three-run homer that inning handed UCLA an 8-0 lead. The Bruins added another run on a triple by Carrithers and an ensuing error by the shortstop, allowing the Bruins' second baseman to score.

UCLA scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-RBI double by pinch-hitter Mickey Weisser.

The Bruins will face Bethune-Cookman at Major League Baseball's Urban Youth Academy (Compton, Calif.) on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Bruins and Wildcats take the national stage Saturday evening, as Gary Thorne and Brian Jordan have the call on ESPN2.

Game Notes: Friday's contest marked UCLA's first ever meeting against Southern University...UCLA last opened its season with three wins in four games in 2004...second baseman Alden Carrithers has hit safely in each of four games this season and boasts a 13-game hit streak, dating back to May 20, 2007 (at Washington State)...freshman southpaw Matt Grace made his collegiate debut, striking out the one batter he faced in the eighth inning.
