12th-Ranked Bruins Still Can't Solve #5 Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked Bruins lost by mercy rule for the second straight game on Friday at #5 Arizona State, falling 9-1 in five innings. Senior Andrea Harrison had the lone shining moment for UCLA with a fourth-inning home run.

The Bruins fall to 25-9 overall and 2-3 in Pac-12 play, while the Sun Devils improve to 34-4 and 6-1 in league action.

Senior Samantha Camuso recorded two of the Bruins' five hits. Freshman Ally Carda (11-3) struck out two in 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, two hits and one walk. Sophomore Jessica Hall fanned four in 3 1/3 frames of relief, giving up seven runs, seven hits and five walks.

It was all Arizona State from the start, as the home team scored two times in the second. Elizabeth Caporuscio opened the inning with a solo homer. One out later, Amber Freeman doubled down the left-field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With Kayla Ketchum running for Freeman and Lucy Aubrecht drawing a walk, Talor Haro lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Ketchum to make it 2-0.

The Sun Devils added four more in the third. Katelyn Boyd walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild one to make it 3-0. One out later, Annie Lockwood singled to left. One more out later, Haley Steele singled to left and Freeman walked to load the bases. Aubrecht then cleared the bases with a double to center to give ASU a 6-0 lead.

The Bruins found their lone score in the top of the fourth, as Harrison hit a 2-1 pitch out to center for her eighth home run of the season to make it 6-1.

Arizona State rallied with two in the fourth and one in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule for the second straight contest. In the fourth, Boyd led off with a double, Alix Johnson walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Lockwood followed with a double down the left-field line to make it 8-1. In the fifth, Bailey Wigness had a one-out single to left and stole second. One out later, Johnson walked and Lockwood closed things out with a single up the middle to score Wigness to finish off the 9-1 rout.
