Champaign, Ill. - A 79th minute goal by senior Lauren Cheney proved to be the difference Friday, as the No. 8 UCLA women's soccer team recorded a 2-1 victory over No. 11 Illinois at the Illini Challenge Cup.
The Bruins (2-1-1) got on the board early, scoring in the fourth minute, as Cheney fed Sydney Leroux the ball inside the box, setting up a goal to the lower left post.
The Illini battled back throughout the first half, evening things up when Chichi Nweke came off the bench to score the equalizer in the 37th minute. Nweke buried a shot to the right post with an assist from Niki Read and freshman Shayla Mutz.
Cheney would get what ended up being the game winner in the 79th minute, collecting a pass from Leroux inside the box, then beating her defender and scoring to the right post. Amelia Mathis was also credited with an assist on the play.
UCLA has one more match in Champaign on Sunday, facing No. 6 Florida at 9:00 a.m. (PST).
