Schroeder Walk-Off Homer Wins It For #3 UCLA

Box Score

LAKEWOOD, Calif. - Sophomore Katie Schroeder hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season, a walk-off bomb in the bottom of the eighth, to give third-ranked UCLA a 2-1 victory over Iowa on Friday at the Long Beach State Invitational.

The Bruins record their third walk-off win of the season, improving to 21-2 with their 16th straight victory. The Hawkeyes fall to 13-4.

Regulation featured a pitcher's duel between UCLA's Donna Kerr and Iowa's Brittany Weil. Kerr earned the win to improve to 11-2 on the year, striking out nine and allowing an unearned run and four hits in eight innings. Weil took the loss, giving up two runs (one earned), three hits and three walks with 12 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. Schroeder finished the game 2-for-4, while Erin Riemersma had two of the Hawkeyes' four hits.

Kerr was her usual dominant self, striking out two in the first, third, fourth and fifth, as well as one in the second. She allowed just three baserunners through the first seven innings on an error in the first, a double in the fourth and a single in the sixth. Kerr retired the side in order in the second, fifth and seventh.

Weil was equally as dominant for the Hawkeyes, retiring the side in order in the second, third and fourth. She fanned at least one in each of the first seven innings, striking out three in the second, two apiece in the third, fourth and seventh and one in the first, fifth and sixth. The Bruins got two baserunners in the first on a single and a hit by pitch and two more in the fifth on a pair of walks. In the sixth, sophomore GiOnna DiSalvatore doubled with one out and sophomore pinch-runner Lauren Mirabal got to third base, but was stranded there. The Bruins also got a one-out walk from freshman Dani Yudin in the seventh, but could not break the deadlock.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect to start the top of the eighth, Iowa placed Katie Keim at second base. After Keim was moved to third on a sacrifice by Liz Watkins, Sam Heinzman singled through the right side to score Keim and make it 1-0.

In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore Monica Harrison started at second base for UCLA. Senior Amanda Kamekona moved Harrison to third on a sacrifice, bringing up Schroeder. The sophomore only needed a deep fly ball to tie the game, but instead hit one out to straightaway center to give the Bruins another walk-off victory.

The Bruins continue play at the Long Beach State Invitational on Saturday against Syracuse. UCLA plays the sixth and final game of the day at Mayfair Park and the scheduled start time for the matchup with the Orange is 7:45 p.m.
