Bruins Can't Soar Past the Hawks in 64-60 Setback

Dec. 22, 2011

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior Markel Walker had 16 points and nine rebounds, all in the second half, sophomore Thea Lemberger added 12 points and five boards and senior Rebekah Gardner posted 10 points and six rebounds, but the Bruins dropped a 64-60 decision to Saint Joseph's on Thursday at Hagan Arena.

The Bruins fall to 5-6 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 7-4.

Walker made 6-of-10 from the field in the second half, with five of her nine boards coming on the offensive end. Sophomore Corinne Costa recorded eight points and six boards, while sophomore Rhema Gardner added six points and five rebounds. The Bruins shot 41.9% (26-62) for the contest, but went 0-for-10 from the three-point line, failing to make a trey for the first time in 30 games.

Saint Joseph's never trailed and scored the first four points of the ballgame. UCLA came back with a jumper from freshman Kacy Swain and a layup by junior Mariah Williams to tie things at four, but a 6-0 Hawk run put the home squad ahead 10-4. As was the story on Tuesday at Temple, the Bruins would counter their opponent's run with one of their own, as they scored six in a row on successive layups by Costa, Rhema Gardner and freshman Moriah Faulk to tie the score at 10. However, Saint Joseph's scored the next five to go ahead 15-10 with nine minutes left in the half.

On a Costa jumper and a Lemberger layup, the Bruins' deficit was cut to one at 15-14. UCLA would get to within one on two more occasions, but could not grab a first half lead. Up 24-22 with four minutes to go, Saint Joseph's scored the last five points of the opening stanza to take a 29-22 advantage into the locker room. Costa equaled her career high in points with eight in the first half on 4-of-4 shooting to go with four rebounds. Lemberger and Swain added four points apiece, as the Bruins shot 40.7% (11-27) from the field.

The Hawks tied for their biggest lead of the game of nine at 31-22 with a bucket to start the second half to continue a 7-0 run, but UCLA responded with an 11-2 spurt to even the score at 33. A Lemberger layup and a three-point play by Gardner made it 31-27. After a Saint Joe's basket, two layups from Lemberger with a pair from the charity stripe by Walker in between tied things up. The Hawks immediately put the pressure back on, scoring 11 of the next 14 to go back up by eight at 44-36.

Saint Joseph's lead never dipped below three for the rest of the game. UCLA scored seven of nine on five points by Walker and a jumper from Rhema Gardner to make it 46-43, but the Hawks came back with a 9-4 run to go ahead by nine at 56-47. The last 13 points of the contest for the Hawks all came at the free-throw line, as the home team went on to win 64-60. Rebekah Gardner scored all 10 of her points in the second half, while Lemberger tallied eight in the final 20 minutes. The Bruins shot 42.9% (15-35) in the second half.

The Bruins open up Pac-12 Conference play on Thursday, Dec. 29 against California at 7 p.m. at the John Wooden Center.
