COMPTON, Calif. - Junior left-hander Tim Murphy registered a season-high 10 strikeouts and did not issue a walk, pitching a complete-game shutout as the No. 3 UCLA baseball team defeated Bethune-Cookman, 2-0, in an Urban Invitational game played at Major League Baseball's Urban Youth Academy on Saturday evening.

A fantastic pitcher's duel between Murphy (1-0) and Bethune-Cookman left-hander Gio Gauthier (0-1), neither team recorded a hit until UCLA senior left fielder Brady Dolan singled to right field to open the top of the third inning. Gauthier limited UCLA (4-1) to one run and two hits through seven innings, striking out seven without walking a batter.

Bethune-Cookman (2-3) managed seven hits off Murphy in nine innings.

Murphy became the first UCLA pitcher to hurl a complete-game shutout since right-hander Hector Ambriz tossed a four-hitter against Pacific on Feb. 25, 2005. The Bruins downed the Tigers in that home contest, 9-0.

Sophomore right fielder Gabe Cohen slugged a solo home run on a full count to lead off the top of the seventh inning, handing UCLA a 1-0 lead. The Bruins added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI-groundout by first baseman Casey Haerther, who advanced home shortstop Brandon Crawford.

Playing before a national stage on ESPN2, Murphy struck out the first six batters he faced. Bethune-Cookman sent four batters to the plate in three innings. The Vista, Calif., resident had enough gas in his tank to record two strikeouts in the ninth inning, rolling his total to 10 when he ended the game striking out shortstop Jose Lozada.

Dolan had two of UCLA's four hits against Bethune-Cookman. Third baseman Emmanuel Castro led Bethune-Cookman's offense, hitting 2-for-3 at the plate.

UCLA returns to action at USC on Sunday at 2 p.m., one hour later than originally scheduled. The game has been moved one hour due to traffic congestion resulting from the Los Angeles Marathon. UCLA southpaw Matt Drummond takes the hill against USC right-hander Brad Boxberger.

Game Notes: Saturday's game marked the first meeting between UCLA and Bethune-Cookman...UCLA last opened its season with four wins in five games in 2000...Tim Murphy's 10 strikeouts are the second most in his career - Murphy fanned 14 batters at Arizona State on May 12, 2007...UCLA improved its record in the inaugural Urban Invitational to 2-0...the Bruins' team ERA dropped to 2.25; Murphy's fell to 0.53 in 17.0 innings pitched this season.
