PALO ALTO, Calif. - Freshman Ben Hohl scored two goals as the No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team dropped a 7-6 decision at No. 4 Stanford late Saturday afternoon in both teams' Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) openers. Stanford's Sage Wright led the Cardinal with a four-goal effort.
The Bruins (8-2, 0-1 MPSF) took a 3-2 first-quarter lead after assuming a 3-1 cushion through the first four minutes. Sophomores Scott Swanson and Scott Davidson and senior Justin Johnson helped give UCLA the early advantage.
Stanford (5-2, 1-0 MPSF) tied the score midway, 3-3, through the second frame. With 2:31 to play before halftime, freshman Ben Hohl registered his first goal of the day to give the Bruins a 4-3 lead. Each team traded goals before the break, handing UCLA a 5-4 advantage through two quarters.
The Cardinal blanked UCLA, 3-0, in the third frame to capture a 7-5 lead. The Bruins cut Stanford's lead in half with a goal by Marco Santos with just 1:19 to play, but UCLA's late rally came up short.
UCLA sophomore goalkeeper Chay Lapin tallied 10 saves. Stanford's Sandy Hohener made 13 stops in the cage.
The Bruins return to action Sunday at UC Santa Cruz. UCLA plays Santa Clara at 10:30 a.m. and takes on UC Santa Cruz at 2 p.m.
