LOS ANGELES - The UCLA baseball team concluded its fall workouts in November and looks forward to the 2012 campaign, which begins in eight weeks. The Bruins return 19 letterwinners, including six position players and one weekend starting pitcher.

The fall video recap (available here) features a one-on-one interview with eighth-year head coach John Savage.

Last season, UCLA went 35-24 and won the then-Pac-10 Conference for the first time since sharing the title in 2000. UCLA last won the conference crown in outright fashion in 1986. The Bruins hosted the NCAA Los Angeles Regional at Jackie Robinson Stadium for the second straight year.

UCLA's junior class features a nucleus of experienced position players, many of which saw substantial playing time as freshmen and at the 2010 College World Series. The team's veteran outfield is comprised of juniors Cody Keefer, Beau Amaral and Jeff Gelalich. Utility infielder Trevor Brown and third baseman Cody Regis also return with significant experience over the last two seasons.

Sophomore Adam Plutko will be counted upon to lead a talented, young pitching staff in 2012. Plutko earned All-Pac-10 Conference honors as a freshman, starting on Sundays, for UCLA in 2011. Classmates Nick Vander Tuig and Zack Weiss are expected to contend for the other two weekend starting rotation slots.

The Bruins welcomed 11 newcomers to the program in September, many of which will be looked upon to contribute both as starters and also as go-to players off the bench, or out of the bullpen.

UCLA opens the 2012 season with a three-game series at home against Maryland on Friday, Feb. 17. Game time of the season opener is 6 p.m. The Bruins and Terrapins continue the three-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m.
