Big Weekend of Action for UCLA Teams

May 12, 2011

LOS ANGELES - This weekend will highlight a big weekend of action for six UCLA sports, as baseball, softball, tennis, rowing, track and field and water polo are all scheduled to compete.

Ranked No. 24 in the nation, the UCLA baseball team opens a three-game non-conference series against Cal State Bakersfield. The Bruins (27-18) take on the Roadrunners on Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans at home can follow all three games live on Gametracker or listen to a live audio broadcast at uclabruins.com. UCLA currently stands third in the Pac-10 Conference with a 14-7 league record, 1.5 games behind first place Oregon State.

The defending champion and 12th ranked UCLA softball team will look to improve on their 15-game winning streak against Oregon as they begin a three-game series against the Ducks in Eugene. The Bruins (32-15, 8-10 Pac-10) will take on the Ducks on Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 11:30 a.m. This will be the last regular season series of the year and fans at home can follow the games live on Gametracker or listen to a live audio broadcast at uclabruins.com. On Sunday, the Bruins will learn their postseason fate as ESPNU airs the NCAA Selection Show at 7 p.m. PT. NCAA Regionals run from May 20-22 at 16 campus sites around the country.

The UCLA women's water polo team makes its seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament this weekend, seeking its sixth NCAA Championship in the last seven seasons. Backed by standout seniors Priscilla Orozco and Grace Reynolds, the No. 3-seeded Bruins (24-6) open tournament action on Friday against No. 6-seeded Indiana (25-11). Game time of UCLA's first-round match on Friday is 1:30 p.m. (PT). This year's NCAA Tournament is being hosted by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The UCLA women's rowing team competes at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships on Saturday before racing in the annual Pac-10 Championships in Lake Natoma, CA, on Sunday. The Bruins' finish at the Pac-10 Championships on Sunday will help determine whether or not UCLA can earn its second consecutive berth to the season-culminating NCAA Tournament.

Both the men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Tucson, AZ to compete in the Pac-10 Championships on Friday and Saturday. Last weekend, six Bruins kicked off the Pac-10 Championships by competing in the heptathlon and decathlon competitions. On the men's side, junior Trent Perez, freshman Marcus Nilsson and sophomore Dominic Giovannoni all scored over 7,000 points in the decathlon to help lead the Bruins to a 1st place standing heading into the full Pac-10 meet this weekend. As for the women, freshmen Tatum Souza and Kimmie Conner both finished in the top eight in the heptathlon, giving the Bruins four points on the afternoon and a 4th place standing heading into the competition this weekend.

Finally, the men's and women's tennis teams will take the court this weekend as they each host NCAA Regionals at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The 12th-seeded UCLA men (16-6) open up the tournament against America East champion Binghamton (12-13) on Friday, May 13 at 1:00 p.m. The winner of that match will take on the winner of Ole Miss and UC Irvine in the second round on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the 6th-seeded UCLA women (18-5) will take on Northeast Conference champion Quinnipiac on Saturday, May 14 at 12:00 p.m. The winner of that match will face the winner of San Diego and UNLV on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Teams that advance through regional play will earn a trip to the NCAA Round of 16, May 19-25, in Stanford, CA. Tickets for this weekend's NCAA Regionals can be purchased upon entrance to the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Adult tickets are $7 and youth/student tickets are $5.
