BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The four-time defending NCAA champion UCLA women's water polo team has been ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division I preseason top-20 poll, as released by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).
UCLA enters the 2009 season having won its last 41 matches, including an undefeated 33-0 season in 2008 (most recent loss came on April 14, 2007). This season, the Bruins return 15 letterwinners, including five seniors - Anne Belden, Brittany Fullen, Tanya Gandy, Kim Nelson and Katie Rulon.
USC has been ranked No. 1, and Stanford has been selected No. 2 in the preseason poll. Hawai'i and California are ranked behind UCLA at the No. 4 and No. 5 selections, respectively. Rounding out the poll's top 10 slots, in order, are San Diego State, San Jose State, Arizona State, UC Davis and Michigan.
UCLA opens the season at the Michigan Invitational on Jan. 24-25. The Bruins will face Bucknell and Indiana on Jan. 24 and Michigan on Jan. 25.
