Malibu, Calif. - UCLA's Amit Inbar concluded his splendid run at the ITA West/South Regional Championships on Tuesday, as the Bruin junior posted a straight-set victory in the singles final at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Inbar, who won six matches over the course of the event, posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Alex Llompart of Pepperdine in Tuesday's championship match. He becomes the first UCLA player to win an ITA Regional singles title since Benjamin Kohlloeffel was a back-to-back winner in 2004 and 2005.
"I felt it coming," said Inbar of his exceptional week. "Even though I lost early in Tulsa a few weeks ago, I felt that I was playing some good tennis. Everything came together in this tournament. I was able to play with a lot of confidence so I'm just happy."
Head coach Billy Martin echoed Inbar's comments.
"He played some very good tennis the whole week I thought," said Martin, who has guided a UCLA player to the championship match in eight of the last nine years. "Yesterday he got off to a really slow start in the semifinals, but stayed mentally in it and pulled out the win. Today, he really was in charge from the first game."
With the win, Inbar earns an automatic berth into the main draw of next month's ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. The tournament is slated to take place Nov. 5-8 in West Haven, Conn.
"I'm excited to get ready for the National Indoors," added Inbar. "These next two weeks I'm going to work hard in practice and really focus on doing well in Connecticut."
