Viuf & Pena Punch Their Tickets To NCAA Outdoor Championships

Katy Viuf and Tori Pena became the first Bruin women to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships as both finished amongst the top 12 in the pole vault at the Pre-Qualifying Meet in Austin, TX on Thursday.

Viuf finished first with a clearance of 13-9.25 as she cleared every bar on her first attempts. Pena was third, also with a clearance of 13-9.25, as she had just one miss during the competition. This will be Pena's second NCAA Outdoor Championship, while VIuf is returning for the third consecutive year. Both are seniors this season. Freshman Karlye Marshall finished tied for 33rd with a clearance of 12-3.50.

Freshman Turquoise Thompson advanced out of the first round of the 400m hurdles as she easily won heat four with a time of 58.97 (6th overall). She will compete on Friday in the quarterfinal round. Junior Ashlea McLaughlin was third in heat two of the 400m, running 53.58, to advance to Friday's quarterfinal round (14th overall). Junior Joy Eaton was fourth in heat five (54.61) and 30th overall.

Senior Krishna Curry finished fourth in heat one of the 800m, running 2:07.95. She was 20th overall and advances to Friday's quarterfinal round.

Junior Shannon Murakami finished ninth in heat one of the 1500m and 30th overall, running 4:27.21. Junior Yasmin Woodruff placed 34th in the 100m with a time of 11.95 (6th in heat two). In the 10,000m, junior Kelcie Wiemann finished 41st in a time of 37:30.07.

Competition continues on Friday in Austin as six Bruins will be in action - Danielle Watson (long jump), Lindsay Rowe (100m hurdles), McLaughlin (400m), Curry (800m) and Thompson (400m hurdles).
