Los Angeles - Senior Michael March of the UCLA men's water polo team earned co-MPSF Mikasa Player of the Week honors, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference announced Monday. He shared the award with USC sophomore Jovan Vranes.
March registered a first-quarter hat trick against Long Beach State on Friday, Nov. 17, to help the Bruins open a 4-1 first-quarter lead. Two days later, he scored two goals to lift third-ranked UCLA past No. 11 UC Irvine, 8-5, in both teams' final regular-season contest.
March has now recorded seven multiple-goal performances this season. The senior defender has scored in seven of UCLA's last eight games (totaling 13 goals in those matches). March missed the entire 2005 season with a back injury, and his successful return to the pool has kept the Bruins in the running for the 2006 MPSF Tournament Championship.
A resident of Newport Coast, Calif., March is the second Bruin to earn the weekly award from the MPSF conference. Classmate Logan Powell was named co-MPSF Player of the Week on Nov. 13 along with UC Irvine's Colin Mello.
The No. 3-seeded Bruins (15-5, 6-2 MPSF) play their first-round MPSF Tournament game Friday, Nov. 24, against No. 6 seed Pacific at UC Irvine. Game time is 1 p.m. The winner of the UCLA-Pacific contest will play the winner of the California-Long Beach State match at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
