LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's water polo team has been selected to finish second out of nine teams in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) preseason coaches' poll, as announced by the conference on Monday.
The defending MPSF Tournament champion Bruins received 55 total points in the preseason poll, including two of nine first-place votes. UCLA was picked to finish behind California, which netted 58 total points, including four first-place votes.
Stanford was selected to finish third, securing two first-place votes, while USC was chosen fourth in the poll, garnering one first-place vote.
UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, Pacific and Pepperdine round out the remaining nine teams in the preseason coaches' poll, respectively.
UCLA ended its 2009 season as the runner-up to USC in the NCAA Tournament, falling to its crosstown rival by a 6-5 margin in the NCAA Championship contest. The Bruins won the MPSF Tournament as the No. 4-seed, defeating No. 5-seed Pepperdine, No. 1-seed USC and No. 3-seed California on consecutive afternoons at USC.
In 2010, the Bruins return 15 letterwinners, including top attackers Ben Hohl and Cullen Hennessy. UCLA brings back a veteran group of five seniors - Hohl, Clay Jorth, Kevin Kuga, Jacob Murphy and Emilio Vieira. Additionally, the team welcomes back a talented trio of true sophomores in Griffin White, Josh Samuels and Bret Lathrope. White and Samuels finished third and fourth, respectively, in goals scored on the team last fall.
UCLA's team reports to campus on Thursday, Aug. 19, in preparation for the team's season-opening contest against Concordia on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Bruins will host 10 regular-season home matches, including the two-day SoCal Tournament (Oct. 2-3) at Spieker Aquatics Center.
