Kono and Michaels Advance at U.S. Women's Amateur

Aug. 6, 2008

Junior Sydnee Michaels and incoming freshman Stephanie Kono advanced to the second round of match play at the 107th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at the Eugene Country Club Wednesday.

Michaels defeated Christina Song in 20 holes and Kono breezed to a 3&2 victory against Julie Yang.

Senior Tiffany Joh, who won the U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks title in June, suffered a shocking 1-up loss to Jane Chin in the first round. A bogey at the 18th hole led to Joh's early exit.

Senior Ryan O'Toole also lost in the first round, falling 4&3 to Stefanie Kenoyer of Lighthouse, Fla.

Second and third round match play competition will continue on Thursday.
