HONOLULU, Hawaii - The No. 1-ranked UCLA women's water polo team used six second-half goals to break a 3-3 deadlock and defeat No. 4-ranked Hawai'i, 9-5, in an MPSF match Friday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Hawai'i junior Angela Turnbull led the Rainbow Wahine (13-5, 6-2 MPSF) with three goals, while junior Kelly Mason and Leonie Van Der Molen each added one goal.
UCLA raced to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, before Hawai'i answered with two goals before the end of the first period. In the second quarter, both teams traded one goal and entered halftime with a 3-3 tie.
Mathewson led the Bruins' third-quarter attack, scoring each of her three goals in that period. A goal by Turnbull from nine meters out with 10 seconds before the break cut UCLA's advantage to 7-4.
The Bruins added two more goals in the fourth quarter, to lead 9-4, before Hawai'i registered its final goal.
UCLA allowed Hawai'i to score once in five six-on-five opportunities.
The Bruins return to action at home next weekend, hosting California on Saturday at 1 p.m. The following afternoon, UCLA hosts Pacific at 1 p.m.
