LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Lauren Cheney paced the Bruins with two goals, and junior Caitlyn Mac Kechnie added another, as the top-ranked UCLA women's soccer team registered a 3-0 victory over Oregon on Sunday at Drake Stadium. The Bruins, who have won six in a row, improve to 9-1-2 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-10. Oregon is still looking for its first conference win, as the Ducks fall to 7-6 and 0-2 in league play.
After playing nearly 24 minutes of scoreless soccer, UCLA got on the board at the 23:49 mark when Cheney put in her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Cheney and senior Danesha Adams worked a nifty give-and-go in the box, setting up Cheney to drive a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner.
Cheney then helped the Bruins to a 2-0 lead, as she set up UCLA's second goal of the match in the 31st minute. Cheney hit a ball up to Mac Kechnie that drew out Oregon goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield. Mac Kechnie got there first, however, dribbling around Chatfield before putting a ball into the empty net.
Cheney capped the scoring for the Bruins at the 48:45 mark on a through ball by Adams. Cheney leads the Bruins in scoring with 31 points on 13 goals and five assists.
Bruin goalkeeper Valerie Henderson made two saves, picking up her ninth victory of the season. The UCLA defense also recorded the team's fifth shutout of the year. UCLA also extended its home winning streak to 34 matches, the longest such streak in the nation. Sunday's showdown will be shown on a tape-delayed basis by Fox Sports Net. It is first scheduled to air in Southern California on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 8:00 p.m. on Fox Sports Prime Ticket.
Stanford also won on Sunday, setting up a major showdown in the Bay Area next week, as the top-ranked Bruins visit the No. 2 Cardinal on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
